Joseph Joffo’s “Un sac de billes” was for many years required reading in the teaching of French. The novel takes place in German-occupied Paris (1942 - 44) which two Jewish boys escape from in order to find safety in the Free Zone in the south of France. To pass the time, they play marbles. |
